YEN DUC – THE SOUL OF VIETNAM THROUGH WATER PUPPETRY
Itinerary
Amid the fast-paced modern world, there exists a place where the authentic charm of rural Vietnam is still beautifully preserved – Yen Duc Village. Here, farmers are not only the caretakers of lush rice fields but also the storytellers of an ancient art: water puppetry.
Water Puppetry – More Than Just a Performance
Dating back over 1,000 years, water puppetry was born from the rice paddies of the Red River Delta. In the past, after a hard-working harvest season, farmers would gather around makeshift water stages to celebrate, bringing puppets to life and telling stories of village life, legends, and age-old traditions.
At Yen Duc Village, this tradition remains untouched by time. What makes it truly special is that the performers are none other than the local farmers themselves. By day, they cultivate the land, and by evening, they transform into skilled puppeteers, standing waist-deep in water behind a bamboo screen. With their masterful hands, they breathe life into wooden puppets, creating magical performances that are not just entertaining, but also a heartfelt welcome from the people of Yen Duc to visitors from around the world.
When the melodic tunes of traditional music begin to play, and the farmers’ voices rise in song, they are no longer just cultivators of the land—they become true artists on the water puppet stage, performing in the midst of their peaceful village.
A Show That Connects and Preserves Heritage
Unlike commercialized performances in big cities, water puppetry in Yen Duc retains its pure, rustic, and authentic village charm. Here, you are not just a spectator—you become part of the story, as the puppets dance on the water, the drums echo through the air, and the laughter of the farmer-artists fills the stage.
